Bowyers' Christmas Carol Service

The first Monday in December is now established as our regular date for the Bowyers' Company Carol Service at our home church of St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate, and so it was that 58 of us, members, families and friends, met there at 7pm on the evening of December 5th.

The traditional service of lessons and carols was led by our Chaplain, the Reverend Dr Alan McCormack, who preached a stirring sermon about Christmas being a time for embracing fresh hopes and opportunities. Lessons from the King James Version were read by Freeman Nigel Heilpern, Liveryman Tweedie Brown, Court Assistant John Ellery, Past Master Peter Seaton and the Master.

St Botolph's superb choir was in top form under its Director Iestyn Evans, with particularly beautiful renditions of 'O Holy Night!' in the John Rutter arrangement of Adam's music, and 'In Dulci Jubilo' in the arrangement by RL Pearson, sung unaccompanied. A beautiful service, and a perfect start to the Christmas season.

We then adjourned to St Botolph's Hall next door for an informal supper, full of good food, good wine and good cheer, everyone happy at what a lovely evening it had been.
