Bowyers' 2021 Carol Service

On Monday evening 6 December the Bowyers’ Company held its annual Carol Service at its home church of St Botolph without Bishopsgate, and it was one of the most perfect any of us could remember.St Botolph's excellent choir under its director Iestyn Evans was on top form for their five choir carols, and we all enjoyed being able to sing aloud once again for our five familiar congregational carols – what a great pleasure.

Liveryman Richard Bowyer and Court Assistant Richard Martin kindly acted as sidesmen, and the five lessons were nicely read by new Freeman Sam Straker-Nesbit, Liveryman Mark Benstead, Court Assistant Myles Archibald, Upper Warden Nigel Heilpern and the Master, David Laxton.

In a very warm address, our Chaplain, The Revd David Armstrong, the Rector, emphasised the social importance of in-person conviviality, and made particular mention that of all the organisations he knew, the Bowyers had made by far the greatest efforts to sustain it through these difficult times.Yes indeed; during the past six months we’ve held three formal dinners including our 400th Anniversary Dinner and annual Agincourt Banquet, and we’ve held six supper evenings, including those accompanying Common Hall, a City Walk and our annual Poitiers Supper.

After the service we all adjourned to the hall next door for an informal Christmas Supper. The whole evening had made a lovely start to the Christmas season; our grateful thanks to Iestyn Evans and the St Botolph choir, and to our organisers, the Clerk and the Master. Very well done!
