Water Music 300 on the Thames

On Monday evening 17 July 2017 the Bowyers' Company hired a boat on the Thames for 70 of us to enjoy a black-tie celebration of the exact 300th anniversary of the first performance of Handel's 'Water Music', which had taken place on the river on 17 July 1717 for King George I.

Our boat was the MV Avontuur IV from Westminster Pier, with live string quintet on board conducted by the eminent Director of Music at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Dr Andrew Earis. The Water Music was brilliantly played for us during a champagne reception on the upper deck (luckily it was a very fine evening), and then played again after the 3-course supper we enjoyed on the lower deck, as the boat trip culminated a splendid and memorable evening by retracing King George I's route up to Chelsea and back.
