Installation Service, 8 July 2020
The Bowyers' Installation was always going to take place on 8 July, we just didn't know where and in what form. However, I am delighted to report to you that following some last minute planning and plenty of flexibility Mr David Laxton was installed as the Master Bowyer in the Church of St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate. Mr Nigel Heilpern was installed as Upper Warden and Alderman Sir David Wootton as Renter Warden albeit by proxy as he was sadly unable to travel. Mr Ian Spring, who we thank for his leadership and hard work over the last two years has taken over as Immediate Past Master from Past Master Tony Kench who, of course, remains on the Court as a voting Court Assistant.
A slightly adapted Installation Ceremony was conducted in front of a select gathering of Court Assistants before our Chaplain, Father David Armstrong, led the service accompanied by Iestyn Evans, the St Botolph Organist and Director of Music and Soloist, Rebecca Hardwick. Humility and the service of leadership were the themes of the chosen reading and the sermon.
Following the traditional photographs in front of the Bowyers' window, the party set off to lunch at the Mercer Restaurant, led through the streets by the Beadle in full regalia and carrying the Company Mace. Lunch was a very convivial and jolly occasion, light on protocol and socially distanced but nonetheless a very welcome opportunity to gather and wish David all the very best for his Mastership. In his speech David focussed on the special nature of the Company and the excellent work that is being done to support our charities. I know that all Bowyers will want to wish David the very best for the next two years, particularly at this extraordinary time.
