Tower Shoot, 25 June

The annual archery competition versus the Fletchers' Company took place in the moat at the Tower of London on Tuesday 25 June. An evenly distributed gathering of 60 Bowyers and Fletchers met to compete for the Governor's Trophy before adjourning to the Officers Mess of the Regimental Headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for a buffet supper and the announcement and awarding of prizes. We were honoured to have as our guests Debra Whittingham, the Deputy Govenor, Col James Denny MBE, the Regimental Secretary of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and Lt Col Jez Lamb MC who has recently handed over as CO of the First Fusiliers. Following a very tight but thoroughly good natured competition the prize was awarded once again to the Fletchers' Company who clinched victory by a single point. The competition is a very popular and much enjoyed event in the annual calendar and like the result highlights the close relationship between the two companies. Of note is the increasing use of Longbows in the competition alongside the more modern compound bows. The evening concluded, as is customary, with a chance to watch the Ceremony of the Keys conducted on this occasion by the Grenadier Guards. Many thanks to Kate Pink, the Clerk of the Fletchers for organising the event, to Bowyer Liveryman Oliver Bolton and the London Archers for organising the archery to efficiently and safely, to the Fusiliers for allowing us to use their Mess and to the many helpers from both Companies.
